Summer In Whistler, Old-School Style
Planning a summer trip to Whistler? We’ve got you. But if you’re hoping to read about some new Kombucha café or poke bar here – you’ll be gravely disappointed. Want to be dialed into the newest hip/haute hotel? On your way. Nothing to see here.
But if you want to consider a most civilized overnight stay in the mountains this summer, and most certainly well into the autumn – then welcome to what I consider to be Whistler’s classic-cool, with some news to share.
Where to stay:
Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Book one of the 11 brand new Alpine Suites in the top floors of this Blackcomb-based hotel. At 600 square feet they’re ideal for a couple, with a separate bedroom, sexy fireplace and lounge area in the adjacent room, and a new, fresh look with modern local artwork and décor. The picture-perfect views from your bed of Whistler Blackcomb and the Coast Mountain Range remind you just what rustic luxury is all about.
What to do (free stuff):
Take advantage of the free guided excursions for all registered hotel guests, like a hike to the Whistler Train Wreck, a cycle along Valley Trail, or learn about the rooftop beehives that make all things honey at the Chateau. Or, just claim yourself officially on vacation and hit the pool deck. Note: if the pool is too busy to find a lounger, you hit the lounge. As in Mallard Lounge. Sip something frosty on the patio and be patient, an hour later it’s a whole different pool scene when you circle back.
What to do (stuff so worth the money):
What’s more classic on vacay than a round of golf? The Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course has a reputation of being both a beauty and a beast. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr. this par 72, 18-hole Audubon-certified course is truly the poster child for luxury mountain resort golf experiences, what with its jaw-dropping views tripping alongside creeks, ponds, Douglas fir and jagged granite. Clearly that’s the beauty. The beast? This course will humble you like no other, especially if you tee off even slightly cocky from the get go. You will likely be spanked and schooled. But who cares in this pristine bubble of beautiful BC?
Where to eat:
Since you’re only overnight, plan for one truly fabulous dinner at an iconic eatery. Hy’s Whistler, situated in the Delta Suites Hotel, is where you want to slide into a leather banquette amidst its classic steakhouse setting – order a perfect cut of beef, a table-side Caesar salad to start, and a big, bold Italian Barbera. Hold up. Newly launched is a happy hour menu served from 4-6 pm, so if the weather is good you could start on the patio sampling the west coast candied salmon, Hy’s classic cheese toast, swishy cocktail specials and (hello!) 40% off champagne and bubbles.
