Matchstick Fraser
At Matchstick, coffee lovers can get a shot of single-origin coffee roasted on site and served with tender loving care by friendly, tattooed baristas.
Started by a husband and wife duo, Spencer and Annie Viehweger, Matchstick Coffee Roasters became a hit with Fraserhood hipsters as soon as the glass doors to their minimalist space opened. Set on a quiet tree lined street where Fraser and Kingsway meet, the cafe pretty much embodies the Vancouver aesthetic: concrete floors, stark white walls, communal table in the centre of a bright and airy room, succulents placed just so on shelves and tables, and large windows from which to see and be seen. This is the kind of place where people like to sit in with their laptop or books, sip their coffee paired with a fresh baked muffin or cookie, and while away an hour (or three).
In the back of the room, there’s a little loungey area, with a sitting bench and trunk that serves as coffee table, and a little bookshelf lined with gently used books for kids. The shelves also feature a handful of curio — think antlers, a mason jar filled with matchsticks, some candles, pretty cookbooks. It all adds up to a pretty charming place where the coffee is as good as the vibe.
