The most colourful celebration in Vancity is upon us with Pride Week this July 30th to August 5th. Join us in a tastebud tour of the best cocktails, offered up by our most talented tapsters and barkeeps.
You’ve marked off the date in your calendar, already started the text threads and put in motion a series of epic patio sessions, dance parties and intimate date nights. Vancouver Pride Week is upon us and we’ve taken the guesswork out of trying to figure out where to go to have that first (or fifth) drink.
Oh, and if going out isn’t your thing and you want have a go at the DIY approach, we’ve got that covered for you, to boot.
Cafe Medina – ‘Jewel of Agrabah’
Cafe Medina Bar Manager, Marc Slingsby-Jones, has created a fruity and flavourful libation that blends jasmine-infused vodka, lychee liqueur, poached pear, blue curaçao and fresh lemon. Inspired by Disney’s Aladdin, this colourful summer cocktail is so enchanting that some may think it was poured straight from a Genie’s magical lamp. The eye-catching tipple is topped with a dried rosebud for an added element of whimsy. Cafe Medina’s ‘Jewel of Agrabah’ cocktail will be available during Vancouver Pride Week from July 30th to August 5th. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation.
- 2 oz. Jasmine-Infused Vodka
- 1/4 oz. Soho Lychee Liqueur
- 3/4 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
- 1 oz. Poached Pear Syrup
- 5 ml Bols Blue Curaçao
- Add all ingredients except Blue Curacao into a cocktail shaker.
- Shake to combine and then strain into a coupe glass.
- Slowly add Blue Curaçao to the glass so that it sinks to the bottom.
- Float rosebud on top of cocktail and serve.
Juke Fried Chicken – ‘Love Game’
Named after the chart-topping song by pop icon Lady Gaga, ‘Love Game’ is a fresh and floral sipper that’ll have you ordering a second. Juke Fried Chicken Bar Manager, Cass Darmanovic, has some fun with this Pride-themed drink, which offers a refreshing blend of gin, Lillet Blanc and fino sherry, with muddled cucumber and lavender for an aromatic finish. Juke’s ‘Love Game’ cocktail will be available from July 30th to August 5th.
- 20mL Gin
- 20mL Lillet Blanc
- 10mL Fino Sherry
- 10mL Vanilla Syrup
- Muddled Cucumber
- Lavender Bitters
- Fresh Lavender
- In a cocktail shaker, muddle together two inches of cucumber and vanilla syrup.
- Add remaining ingredients to the shaker, excluding soda.
- Shake vigorously.
- Single-strain over ice into a collins glass.
- Top with soda and garnish with a fresh lavender sprig.
Tacofino – ‘Ro-Slay Sangria’ (August 3rd to 6th; Gastown and Hastings locations only)
A perfect patio sipper, Tacofino’s Pride-themed sangria will have you shouting “Ro-Slay All Day!” and ordering another round. The pink-hued punch offers a south-of-the-border spin on the classic Spanish sangria and features a mélange of rosé, tequila, agave and fresh berries. Tacofino’s ‘Ro-Slay Sangria’ ($8 glass, $24 pitcher) will be available from August 3rd to 6th at both the Gastown Taco Bar and Hastings Street locations. One dollar from each glass and two dollars from each pitcher sold will be donated to QMUNITY, a non-profit organization based in Vancouver, BC that works to improve queer, trans, and two-spirit lives.

Combine all ingredients in a pitcher and serve.

The Salted Vine – ‘Raspberry Punch’
Sweet and summery, The Salted Vine’s’ ‘Raspberry Punch’ cocktail is the perfect bevvy to cool you down following an afternoon in the great outdoors. From July 30th to August 5th, 10 percent of the proceeds from each cocktail will be donated to Safe ‘n Sound, a Squamish-based non-profit organization that celebrates and honours lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer + citizens, and their families and allies, through awareness, education, visibility and resources.
- 2 oz. Rum
- 4 oz. Black Tea (cooled)
- 1 oz. Fresh Lime Juice
- 1 oz. Mango Puree
- 1/2 oz. Grenadine
- Fresh Mint
- Add all ingredients to a cocktail tin and shake vigorously with ice for 7-10 seconds.
- Serve in sling glass with ice.
- Grate nutmeg on top.
- Garnish with fresh mint and lime wedge.
Wildebeest – ‘Safe Word’
A cheeky riff on a classic cocktail, ‘Safe Word’ is the creation of Wildebeest bartender, Drew McGuire, who designed the playful drink in honour of Vancouver Pride Week. Much like the iconic ‘The Last Word’, this tasty libation features gin and green chartreuse, but is updated with the addition of cherry brandy (rather than the traditional maraschino liqueur). Garnished with a playful orange peel ‘whip’ and BC cherry fruit leather ‘bow’, this frisky Pride-themed beverage delivers just the right amount of naughty. Wildebeest’s ‘Safe Word’ cocktail will be available from July 30th to August 5th and a portion of the proceeds from each cocktail will be donated to the Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation.
- 20ml Rose Petal-Infused Gin
- 30ml Cherry Brandy
- 20ml Green Chartreuse
- 20ml Fresh Lemon Juice
- Orange peel
- BC Cherry Fruit Leather
- Place ingredients in mixing glass, add ice and shake vigorously.
- Fine-strain in chilled cocktail coupe glass.
- Garnish with orange peel ‘whip’, and BC cherry fruit leather ‘bow’.
