We’ve selected the best back-to-school backpacks for your precious ones, just in time for the big first day back to school.

Back-to-school season is a stressful time for everyone. Parents dread the early morning back-to-school routine and the kids are nervous and worried about teachers, friends and homework. Even your dog appears to be picking up on the tense vibes. We get it, so we decided to put together our best picks for back-to-school bags for your grade school kids. And, we whittled it down to three choices because the last thing you need is more decisions to make.

SoYoung Dino Backpack:

SoYoung makes bags for adults, kids and babies. The Canadian-based brand materialized in 2010 when founder, Catherine Choi, struggled in vain to find a diaper bag that ticked all the boxes, so she made her own. In 2014, SoYoung partnered with Jessica Alba’s mega baby brand, The Honest Company, and the rest is history.

We fell in love with the Grade School Dino Backpack and recommend picking up the matching lunch kit. The bag is rugged and durable with a waterproof base and is machine washable. Binders, a change of clothes and a water bottle fit easily in the various compartments and the adjustable straps come with comfy fitting chest buckles. If dinosaurs don’t tickle your little ones fancy, there is an array of art to choose from (sharks, bunnies and even unicorns).

Parkland Bayside Backpack:

Parkland is another Canadian-based brand and with ties to the global juggernaut brand Herschel Supply Co. What makes Parkland particularly appealing, is its attention to sustainability with the bag exterior being made out of recycled plastic bottles. Created in 2015, the brand makes stylish, playfully designed bags, with the buyer feeling good about contributing to a cleaner planet through recycling.

The Bayside Dino Backpack was our top pick (notice a theme here). Again, the matching lunch kit is a must. We loved the look and cool ‘designed for’ inner label and, of course, the durable recycled material. The price point on Parkland’s products is also attractive at $39.99 CAD.

Fjällräven Kånken Backpack:

Swedish outdoor brand, Fjällräven, created the Kånkan bag back in 1978 to help prevent back problems for Swedish school kids. The square silhouette of the bag begs to be filled with books and the Vinyl F-grade fabric is water-resistant and incredibly durable. The straps are made out of one long piece of material that integrates with a back handle minimizing material waste during the manufacturing process. We love the large selection of colours and how well the bag ages with heavy use.

Fun fact: In 2016, the Swedish Society of Crafts and Design officially recognized the Kånken as applied art. This means your little one can carry his or her artwork home in a work of art!
