A partridge in a pear tree, two turtle doves, three french hens, four calling birds…

If you’re thinking of taking gift-giving advice from a Christmas carol from yesteryear, well, don’t. We’ve put together a holiday gift guide to end all holiday gift guides, and there’s something (backpack! tech gear! restaurant gift certificates! hotel staycation!) in here for everyone in your fam—including your sweetheart. Even better, we’re giving most of the items on this list away during our 12 Days of Giveaways event.

100% Chance Of Rain
Quick, how many umbrellas have you gone through in the last year? In the last five years? Here in Vancouver where it rains, oh, 268 days a year, you’re probably well into the double digits. In an increasingly disposable world, most umbrellas are not designed and built to weather the storm, as you would hope. Indeed, you’re lucky if an umbrella makes it through a winter season. But it doesn’t (and shouldn’t) be like that. Through a desire for better days in the rain, the fine folks at Westerly developed a line of products that empower adventure and exploration while keeping you dry. Whether you’re checking the morning surf, venturing through the rain forest or navigating the city streets, a Westerly umbrella has you covered—literally. We love the company’s Commander line, high-end model of a classic stick umbrella that holds nothing back. It features a premium maple handle and full fibreglass reinforced frame. Like a well-made winter coat, “this is the umbrella your grand-kids will appreciate inheriting one day,” as Westerly puts it. Perfect for stashing in your purse or backpack, the Drifter packable umbrella is built to last without weighing you down.

Stretch Further
You’re a doer. You’re out and about getting shit done. Your typical weekend might start on the saddle as you pedal to the farmers market followed by a hike in the woods with your hound and dinner and drinks at Tacofino. Ain’t nobody got time for outfit changes. That’s where DUER comes in. The Vancouver company launched in 2013 when entrepreneur Gary Lenett wanted to bridge the gap between fashion and functional clothing. With a passion for biking and 25 years experience making jeans for big names like Levi Strauss, Lenett saw an opportunity for purposeful fashion that didn’t exist on the market. He partnered with Abid Hafeez, a performance fabric expert with over 25 years of experience with technical brands, and DUER was born. The local Vancouver company helps you dress well in ridiculously comfortable clothes that take you from the great outdoors to the chic indoors. Earlier this year they launched a unique collection crafted for women where fashion and function collide in a variety of styles and the same features loved by DUER men—from antibacterial properties to help combat odor, to the integration of TENCEL to control moisture. All-weather denim that looks good and performs well? Yes please.

Ruffing It
Outdoor pursuits with your four-legged friends are even better when you’re both wearing the right gear. Ruffwear, which makes apparel, harnesses and toys, has become the industry leader in performance dog gear designed for adventure. Our pooch, Luna, loves her Overcoat Fuse, a single jacket-harness combo with weather-resistant shell, fleece lining and two leash attachment points: aluminum V-ring on the back and reinforced webbing loop on the front. The leash attachment points are secured to the webbing harness interior for secure leash connection. Two low-profile zippered pockets allow for small essentials like pick-up bags, while side-release buckles provide a secure, easy on/off. Meanwhile, the Ridgeline Leash is a minimalist option for adventurers. Date Night Delight
Bufala Edgemont officially opened its doors in North Vancouver on November 19th, just in time for the holiday season madness. We checked out the second Bufala manifestation (the first opened in Kerrisdale in 2014) and loved everything about it. The modern contemporary design offers a warmth and coziness often lost in spaces with comparable amounts of concrete, metal and floor to ceiling windows. This is not the case with Bufala as the lighting warms up and softens the metal fixtures and checker board floors. The walnut tones, varied seating styles and pronounced wine bar at the entrance make you feel like you’ve landed up at a spot designed to bring people together for good food and drink. Eating is fun at Bufala because the wine pairing and cocktail options are tuned perfectly for the Italian inspired fare. Stand outs for us were the bone marrow pizza, spicy sausage calabria pizza and the peace country lamb shank. ($150)
