At a Black Box cooking competition in the new Red Seal Chef Training Program kitchen, White Spot announces partnership with Buy BC and the return of highly anticipated BC blueberries promotion.

The top brass at Legendary Canadian restaurant chain, White Spot invited a crowd of industry partners, media heads, family and friends out to hear some great news.

White Spot President, Warren Erhart, shared details of the in-house Red Seal Corporate Training Program and how it sets the restaurant chain apart from its competitors by ensuring that talent grown from within, stays within. As the famous saying goes, What if we invest in training our employees and they leave? What happens if we don’t and they stay? White Spot is in the business of employing and training its people to succeed, which is how they continue to win fans and stay ahead of the culinary curve.

At the event, Honourable Lana Popham, BC Minister of Agriculture, talked about the Buy BC program, which connects and commits White Spot to sourcing ingredients locally, such as the scrumptious BC blueberries used to make pies and shakes available at all Triple O’s and White Spot locations.

After the announcement and a heartfelt cheers, guests turned their attention to the black box cooking competition in the Red Seal Corporate Training kitchen. Eight teams comprised of local media magnates were given access to an array of ingredients and one Red Seal Chef per team. Each team then had 45 minutes to create the best dish possible using the available ingredients. Each team cooked not just for bragging rights if they won but also the chance to donate a grand prize of $5000 to a charity of their choice.

While the cooking competition took place, guests mingled and sampled tasty bites from the buffet of seafood platters, charcuterie boards, a roast beef station and other mouth-watering offerings. For dessert? Blueberry pie, of course.

Once the competition judges—Lana Popham, Certified Chef de Cuisine and White Spot Corporate Chef James Kennedy, and respected food writer Nathan Fong—tallied up the results, the crowd gathered to find out who created and plated the best black box dish.

The competition was tough, said Nathan Fong, but in the end Jim Gordon and Leeta Liepins, TV Host/Co-Executive Producers of ‘Our City Tonight TV,’ which airs Sundays at 12:30pm on CityTV, were crowned the winners and they were presented with a check of $5000 to donate to Covenant House. The runner-up team won $1000 for its favourite charity and everyone else got to donate $100 towards the charity of choice.
